Carriage House Collective  and Caribou Baby are pleased to announce ”Mother Me”, an exhibition of dynamic photographs, all taken by female photographers.  Proceeds from print sales will go to Earth Birth, an International Women’s Health Collective run by midwives that builds birth clinics to encourage and promote safe, peaceful birth as an act of social justice and community healing.
“Mother Me” focuses on intimate stolen moments within a new family, either in the months of pregnancy or in the day-to- day life of parents in years to come. Each photographer has a unique gaze from which she has focused her camera.

Sonnet by Marnie Andrews

Above my head a hawk dips by the sun
Then drops a feather, as if toward my hand,
Floating down, I remember that one
Spirit, just flown, still sheds her gifts that land

So gently on my soul.  A woodpecker’s cry
Pierces my reverie, reminder of the curtain
Death draws down, and memory of her wry
Musings, sharp wit, and kind action

Move me past my mourning of her absence
Into action.  For she could not have known
The wealth she gave, in praises of my presence,
Nor how her gifts illuminate my own.

My unknowing mentor helps my voice to sing
And to recognize others that need voicing.
So while I’ve time remaining, I’ll give wing
To fledglings not yet sure of flying.

My own last cry will come, desired or no,
So, for her, I’ll drop a feather as I go.

Over the past 3 years I have taught a photography workshop at the Creative Center, a non-profit organization that provides free art classes to people living with cancer. The 12 week course is called “Visual Diaries” and in it, participants use digital cameras to tell their own personal cancer stories through a series of assignments and editing sessions. The last 2 workshops have been in collaboration with CancerCare’s Young Adult Program and we are excited to be putting together an exhibition of the those 13 participants’ work.
